Abstract
The Power Requirements in. Andaman & Nicobar Islands have so far been, arranged to be met on ad-hoc basis by installing diesel generating sets and second hand’ packaged steam plant. The load in South Andaman has now reached a level, requiring reliable and long term arrangements to be made to put power supply in a Sound fooling. Studies have been carried out regarding optimum arrangements for meeting the .long term power requirements of these islands and comparative economics for installing a Coal based Station of 2x5 is capacity against the Thermal Station using furnace oil or installing diesel generating sets of equipment, was examined. The results of these studies indicated that setting up of a coal based station at the stage is the only economical and reliable arrangement to meet the long term power requirements. If the project is sanctioned in 1977-78 (before 3/78) the first 5 m W unit is expected to be commissioned by August 1982 and the second unit by March 1983. The project will give full benefits by the end of new Five Year Plan.
