Out of the total population of Arunachal Pradesh, the working force is about 2.69 lacs. Out of that about 2.16 lacs are engaged in agriculture. This works out to roughly 80% of the total working population. The preponderance on agriculture is a clear pointer to the backwardness of the economy. The work participation rate is about 57.65% according to the latest census. This shows only a marginal improvement on the same figure obtaining in 1961. The comparative All India figure is 33.5%. Though unemployment is not a problem in Arunachal Pradesh the territory is beset by under- employment.
