The report on Indian Systems of Medicine and Homeopathy (ISM&H) for the Tenth Five-Year Plan (2002–2007) highlights the strategic importance of traditional healthcare systems in India, including Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani, Yoga, Naturopathy, and Homeopathy. Recognized for their affordability, accessibility, and preventive focus, these systems play a critical role in rural healthcare. Despite widespread use, ISM faces challenges related to credibility, standardization, and quality control. The report emphasizes strengthening infrastructure through specialized treatment centers, enhancing research via clinical trials, and implementing Good Manufacturing Practices for medicinal products. Education and training reforms, including National Centres of Excellence and updated curricula, aim to improve practitioner quality. Public awareness campaigns and integration into national health programs are proposed to increase accessibility and acceptance. Financial provisions totaling Rs. 1,700 crores are allocated to support infrastructure, research, and innovative pharmaceutical development. Overall, the document underscores the government’s commitment to revitalize ISM, enhance its global competitiveness, and integrate traditional medicine into mainstream healthcare to improve national health outcomes.
