Abstract

Cattle population in India is the largest in the world, with the country accounting for about 176 million cattle and 51 million buffaloes which work out to 200 and 540 of the world total., respectively. This advantage of numbers instead of being a positive' asset, is a drag on the economy. The First Plan estimated that 100 of the cattle and buffaloes were unserviceable while the available feed and fodder resources were hardly enough to maintain about 660 of the existing cattle population.
