Abstract

After nearly 450 years of colonial Portuguese Rule, Goa, Daman & Diu formed a Union Territory in democratic India vide constitution (Twelfth Amendment) Act, 1962 dated March 27, 1962. Goa, Daman & Diu attained independence on 19th December, 1961 and Goa attained statehood on 30th May 1987 and Daman & Diu formed a separate Union Territory prior to the attainment of Statehood in May 1987. Goa was one of the three districts in the erstwhile Union Territory of Goa, Daman & Diu consequent upon the formation of new State of Goa, it was divided into two districts viz. North Goa and south Goa in August 1987.
