Abstract

Travelling is as old as mankind. Only the reasons to venture out of home have changed over time. In the past, travel was undertaken for some specific purpose, be it trade, pilgrimage or conquest. In the recent years, a major shift has taken place in the motivations for travel. It is the new phenomenon of travelling in pursuit of leisure, culture and the quest for knowledge about alien lands. This shift from unintended pleasure out of travel to travelling exclusively for pleasure constitutes the story of "tourism".
