dc.description.abstractThe comprehensive surveys of employment and unemployment conducted by the NSSO at quinquennial intervals since 1972-73 and data available from other sources like the Annual Survey of Industries (ASI) and the Employment Market Information (EMI) programme of the Ministry of Labour enable an analysis of the trends and structure of employment for the last fifteen years. Employment is estimated I to have grown at around 2% per annum over the period 1972-73 to 1987-1988. (Table 1). Rural Employment has grown at a rate of 1.75% per annum while urban employment has grown at a relatively much faster rate of around 4% per annum. As a result, the share of urban areas in total employment has increased from 16% to 22% over the period 1972-73/1987-88.
