Shri M. S. Sivaraman’s 1968 report, Green Manuring: Some Mistaken Notions, critically examines prevalent misconceptions about green manuring in Indian agriculture and underscores its vital role in enhancing soil fertility, crop yields, and farmer sustainability. Drawing on extensive experimental evidence from Indian Agricultural Research Stations, Sivaraman demonstrates that green manuring significantly boosts cereal production, with regions like the Tambrabarni Valley achieving paddy yields four times the national average. Contrary to criticisms that green manures are bulky, minimally effective, or detrimental to crop output, the report highlights innovative techniques that allow simultaneous cultivation of green manure alongside regular crops, thereby improving nitrogen content without sacrificing yields. Research from the Central Rice Research Institute and field trials in Cuttack reveal that nitrogen from green manure can surpass conventional fertilizers in effectiveness, while long-term use enhances organic matter content, soil health, and resilience to drought. Socioeconomic analyses indicate that green manuring offers an economically feasible option for resource-poor farmers, reducing dependence on costly external inputs and promoting self-sufficiency. Sivaraman concludes that large-scale adoption of green manuring, tailored to India’s climatic advantages, can foster sustainable agricultural growth, improve financial stability for farmers, and contribute to a broader revival of soil fertility, productivity, and environmental sustainability across the country.
