Proceedings of the Workshop on Creation of Nationwide Network of NGOs for Accelerated Development held on 29th April, 1992 in the Planning Commission

Abstract

The 1992 Planning Commission workshop aimed to establish a nationwide network of NGOs to accelerate development through community participation, aligning with the Eighth Five-Year Plan’s people-centric approach. Key objectives included promoting self-managed community institutions, replicating successful NGO models, reducing government dependence, and focusing on vulnerable rural, tribal, and urban slum areas. The workshop, attended by representatives from 40 voluntary organizations and 12 government ministries, recommended creating an autonomous National Federation of NGOs, streamlining project approvals, enhancing flexible government support schemes, and prioritizing outcome-based evaluations. Emphasis was placed on improving NGO-government coordination, capacity building, training, and information dissemination. The workshop concluded with a consensus on the urgent need for a collaborative national NGO network to drive sustainable and inclusive development across India.
