Abstract
Major indicator of development of an economy happens to be the national income state income. It gives the overall levels of production of commodities and services in monetary terms and also an insight into the performance of the different industry sectors comprising economy. An assessment of Gujarat state economy on the basis of its ‘state domestic product shows that it has made rapid strides in all spheres. In the period after its advent the ‘state’s domestic product’ at current prices has risen from about Rs. 738 crores to Rs. 2084 crores in 1970-71 and it is anticipated that this will increase to about Rs. 2256 crores by 1973-74. If allowance is made for the rise due to increase in prices of goods and services during The period, the state domestic product has increased from about Rs. 738 crores in 1960-61 to about Rs. 1149 crores in 1971-72 (at 1960—61 prices). The differential growth in the state domestic product at current and constant prices conveys an idea of the movement in general price level in the state in the period after 1960-61. In per capita terms, the state domestic product at current prices has shown a steady rise from about Rs. 362 in 1960-61 to Rs. 778 in 1970-71, but there is some erosion in this rise due to the unprecedented growth in the population which according to population census of 1971 is growing at a rate of 2.94 per cent annually.
