This paper examines historical trends and future projections of rail and road traffic in India, highlighting the interplay between transportation demand and economic growth. Between 1950 and 1986, freight traffic increased sevenfold and passenger traffic over tenfold, with road transport gaining a larger share at the expense of rail. Elasticity analysis reveals high sensitivity of traffic to economic variables, particularly GNP. Projections up to 2000 indicate continued growth in both rail and road freight, with rail remaining focused on bulk commodities like coal and iron ore, while road transport dominates perishable and general goods. The study underscores the need for integrating freight rates, pricing strategies, and regional dynamics into transport planning. These insights are vital for guiding infrastructure investments, formulating responsive transport policies, and sustaining economic development through efficient transportation systems.
