Abstract

The Project for Agricultural Planning based on Agro-climatic Regions was launched in June, 1988 with the setting up of 15 Zonal Planning Teams,(ZPT) one for each of the identified Agro-climatic Regions. the project aimed to provide technical input toward formulation of the Eighth Plan as well as to have long term perspective of agricultural development. the composition of the Planning Teams was broad-based, chaired by the Vice Chancellor of a State Agricultural University located within the Region with the Vice-Chancellors of the remaining agricultural universities in the Region as members. Each Planning Team was also constituted by: the Commissioners or Secretaries in charge of Agriculture, Irrigation and Animal Husbandry, and Chief Conservators of Forest of the States falling (fully or partly) within the Region ; representatives of the Central Ministries of Agriculture (including Agro-Economic Research Centre located within the region) and Water Resources, as well as the Planning Commission; representative from cooperative, financial, remote sensing and voluntary agencies.
