Abstract
The major objective of dairy development programme in the Ninth Five Year Plan is to increase milk production by encouraging dairying as a self supporting and economically viable activity especially for small and marginal farmers and rural landless labourers. The target in the Ninth Five Year Plan is to cover 40 towns inclusive of 23 towns of Operation Flood Programme with total installed handling capacity of 733 TLPD including 189TLPD chilling capacity per day by organising 5050 milk producers' cooperative societies inclusive of Operation Flood area by 1997-2002.
By the end of 1999-2000, 3700 milk producers' cooperative societies and milk unions have been registered inclusive of 2700 dairy cooperative societies and 9 milk unions in Operation Flood area.
