dc.description.abstractThe Ministry of Iron and Steel was created from 15th June, 1955, by a Presidential order and the following subjects were allotted to it:— Government industrial undertakings for the production of Iron and Steel. Government-owned foundries. The creation of a separate Ministry to deal with the task of building steel plants in the public sector underlines the Government’s determination to achieve the target of 6 million tons during the Second Plan Period. The Ministry of Iron and Steel took over from the Ministry of Production the responsibility for the planning and execution of the two Steel Works at Rourkela and Bhilai and also the administration of the Nahan Foundry Limited, Nahan (Himachal Pradesh). the planning and execution of the third steel plant at Durgapur in West Bengal was taken over from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
