Abstract

The Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli situated on the Western Coast of India near the Bulsar District and has an area, of 491 Sq.Kms. This Territory was in different stream than the rest of the country for about two centuries. When the rest of the country was under British Rule, this Territory was under the Portuguese Rule. This Territory was handed over to Portuguese by the Marathas in. 1783 as a token of friendship in a return of Rs.12,000/- annual revenue and thereafter remained under its Rule till 1954. In 1947 the rest of the country breathed an air of freedom, this Part of the country continued to be under the yoke of foreign rule and it was only in 1954 that the people of the Territory threw away the reigns of foreign rules and achieved independence. Again it was different than one rest of the country that from 1954 to 1961, this Territory remained a true form of democracy as it was run by its people through an Administrator appointed by themselves, finally on 11th August 1961, the Territory merged with the Union of India and came to have its participation in the development of the country. Since 1961 it is a Centrally administered area under the control, of Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India.
