Uttar Pradesh has a population of over one crore of cows and she-buffaloes, while the number of improved bulls is only a little over 30,000. Through natural service, these bulls can hardly cover about three lakhs of cows or she-buffaloes in a year, while with artificial insemination the same number of bulls can suffice for the entire population of cows and she-buffaloes. Artificial insemination is a process by which semen is introduced in the female reproductive organs of the cows or she-buffaloes by mechanical means.
