The magnitude of the problem which a backward State like ours faces, is such that even after implementation of three five year plans with a fair degree of success, much yet remains to be done. According to the census of 1961,85.22 per cent of our total working force is engaged in agriculture. The corresponding All India figure is 79.22 per cent. We have twenty lakh acres of cropped area, out of which about fifteen lakh acres are under major food crops namely rice, maize and wheat.
