Abstract

The over-all picture is that with only about 2% of the total forest area of the world, India supports about 15% of the total human population and about one seventh of the cattle population of the world. The per capita-forest area in India is about one-tenth of the corresponding world average. The per capita growing stock of the forests under working is only 5.2 cu. meters as against 46.7 cu, meters for the world. The existing level of production from the forests is far short of the actual requirements.
