Abstract
The Report on Improving Undergraduate Science Education in India highlights the urgent need to enhance the quality of science education across Indian universities and colleges. Declining student interest, perceived poor career prospects, and inadequate infrastructure in affiliated colleges have contributed to a significant deterioration in standards, impacting India’s socio-economic and technological development. To address these challenges, the Working Group chaired by Prof. V.G. Bhide proposed a three-tier strategy: (i) a specialized program for 700 highly talented students to pursue integrated five-year MSc degrees, (ii) targeted support for 100 colleges to improve infrastructure, laboratories, and teaching quality, and (iii) deployment of video lecture libraries to reach students in resource-poor affiliated colleges. The report emphasizes financial planning with an estimated expenditure of Rs. 55.12 crores during the Eighth Five-Year Plan, combining recurring and non-recurring costs. It calls for immediate implementation, central coordination through a dedicated Council, and continuous monitoring to ensure quality and innovation in pedagogy. Overall, the report advocates a structured, supported, and innovative approach to revitalize undergraduate science education, fostering talent and strengthening India’s scientific and technological capacity.
