Abstract

The Draft Five-Year Plan (1978–83) for the Directorate of Archaeology and Museums in Madhya Pradesh outlines a systematic framework for the exploration, excavation, conservation, and presentation of the state’s rich archaeological heritage. With a proposed outlay of Rs. 200 lakhs, the plan prioritizes archaeological exploration and excavation at significant sites, protection and conservation of monuments, and the expansion and modernization of museums. Special emphasis is placed on safeguarding over 3,500 monuments, including those of national importance, through the establishment of a dedicated conservation wing and chemical preservation measures. The plan also introduces a Tribal Sub-Plan aimed at preserving tribal culture through specialized museums and cultural infrastructure in tribal-dominated regions. A review of the previous plan reveals administrative and staffing shortcomings, leading to recommendations for enhanced institutional capacity, creation of new technical units, and manpower expansion. Overall, the plan reflects a strategic commitment to heritage management, improved governance, and sustainable preservation of Madhya Pradesh’s archaeological resources.
