This is looked after by the Estate Office, which was, prior to the war, under the control of the Central Public Works Department. With the increase in the volume and importance of work and in view of the difficulties arising out of the acute shortage of accommodation, the Estate Office was separated from the Central Public Works Department and brought directly under the Ministry in 1944. It is mainly responsible for the allotment of office and residential accommodation to Central Government offices and employees at Delhi, Simla, Bombay and Calcutta, and for the assessment and recovery of rent of the buildings. It is also responsible for the leasing and requisitioning of private houses, management of Central Government hostels at Delhi, Simla, Bombay and Calcutta, allotment of refrigerators and air-conditioners, eviction of unauthorised occupants of Government residences and recovery of damages from them.
