Abstract

The monsoon started at the normal time during the year 1993-94 with widespread rains covering the entire State. The crop conditions were satisfactory upto the end of July 1993. However, thereafter there was a long dry spell of about 10 weeks after the third week of July 1993. This long dry spell affected very adversely the kharif crops like groundnut, jowar, bajra, maize etc. As a result, the State is expected to harvest only about 18.70 lakh tonnes of kharif foodgrains and 2.65 lakh tonnes of ground nut. The production of cotton is likely to be around 11.00 lakh sales of 170 kgs. each. Thus, the production of various crops during the agricultural year 1993-94 has been unsatisfactory.
