The Working Group Report on Child Survival and Child Health Development Activities outlines strategic interventions for improving the health and survival of children in India during the Eighth Five-Year Plan (1990–1995). With children under 14 years constituting 40% of the population, the report emphasizes that child mortality and morbidity are closely linked to maternal health, nutrition, and access to quality healthcare services. Key findings indicate that the Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) was 95 per 1,000 live births in 1987, with leading causes of morbidity including vaccine-preventable diseases, diarrheal illnesses, respiratory infections, malnutrition, and anemia. Preventable disabilities, such as blindness due to Vitamin A deficiency and poliomyelitis-related impairments, underscore the need for effective immunization and health interventions. Strategic recommendations focus on minimum perinatal care, safe delivery practices, antenatal care for high-risk pregnancies, and iron-folic acid supplementation to manage maternal anemia. Expansion of immunization programs, health education initiatives, and the strengthening of health infrastructure—including trained personnel and emergency facilities—are highlighted as essential measures. Special thrust areas include disease surveillance, community participation, and enhanced training for health workers. The proposed financial outlay for these interventions is Rs. 7180.5 million, covering immunization, maternal and child health services, and essential drug supply. Overall, the report presents an integrated approach linking maternal and child health, preventive care, education, and community engagement to reduce mortality and morbidity rates and promote long-term child health improvements in India.
