Industrially the State is very backward, contribution of the industrial and raining scoter to the state income being no none than 14-15 percent. A little over 2,600 registered factories, on an average, employ about 1.86 lakh workers daily thereby underscoring the severe poverty and economic backwardness of the inhabitants of the State. The Henning Commission's Working Group on Identification of Backward Areas has placed Madhya Pradesh sixth lowest (80 points) in terms of overall indicators of industrial development (or backwardness).
