Abstract

The 1955 report on Educated Persons in India, compiled by the Planning Commission and Indian Statistical Institute, provides a comprehensive overview of education and employment patterns based on the NSS Ninth Round. With approximately 4.7 million educated individuals, stark disparities emerged across gender, age, and urban-rural settings. Men dominated both education and labor participation, while women faced higher unemployment and concentrated roles in the public sector. Young graduates experienced particularly high unemployment, highlighting challenges in job absorption. Employment patterns showed a significant shift from agriculture to services, trade, and professional occupations.
