Abstract
The Applied Nutrition Programme represents a bold attempt at helping people, especially in the vulnerable groups, to improve their level and consciousness of nutrition. Initiated in Orissa in 1959 under the name of Expanded Nutrition Programme, it was later taken up in Andhra Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. Madras followed in 1962, by which time the programme had assumed its present name. By 1965-66, the programme is expected to be in operation in all the States and Territories of India. The importance of the programme from the point of view of its goals as well as its recent and projected expansion, led the Ministry of Community Development and Cooperation in 1964 to request the Programme Evaluation Organization to undertake a quick evaluation. The International agencies-UNICEF, FAO and WHO-, cooperating in this programme, have also been very keen on its evaluation, especially as India has made pioneering efforts for implementing such a programme. Accordingly, late in 1964, the Programme Evaluation Organization undertook a quick evaluation of the working of this programme in Andhra, Madras, Orissa and U.P.
