dc.description.abstractThe results of the 1981 census indicate that the urban population of India is now about 160 million. Although this number implies that the urban population is still less than a quarter of the total population in the country, the absolute magnitude is so large that it warrants a close new look at the existing policies concerned with housing and urban development.
