Abstract

Out of 456 urban centres where possibilities exist for the utilization of urban refuse and night-soil for the production of compost, 400 centres are estimated to have been covered by the end of the Second Plan. It is contemplated to start work in the remaining 56 centres during the Third Plan period and also to maximise the production in the existing centres. Besides improving the sanitary conditions in the towns, the manure will improve the fertility of the soil and increase production. This manure is mainly utilized for the production of vegetables near about towns. the additional manure would increase the production of vegetables by 0.68 lakh tons.
