Abstract
The characteristic feature of these islands is one of pure coconut culture rather than coconut based agriculture. Coconut covers almost the entire cultivable area of 27.80 ha. of the territory. Since in the past property status used to be recognised in terns of number of trees than area of land possessed, haphazard and close planting are resorted to resulting in over population of coconut in addition to human on the land. The coconuts are grown purely under rainfed condition. The common variety of coconuts grown in the islands are Laccadive ordinary, Laccadive small and Laccadive micro of which the proportion of Laccadive micro is very small.
