The study on the Utilisation of Urban Wastes was undertaken as a part of the study on Utilisation of Agricultural and Industrial Wastes on a directive of the Committee on Natural Resources. A Working Group consisting of the following members prepared the Report. 1. Dr. K. N. Synghal, Ministry of Food and Assistant Fertilizer Adviser Agriculture. 2. Shri L. S. Yadava, Ministry of Food and Technical Officer (Compost Agriculture. and Sewage). 3. Shri S. Rajagopalan, Ministry of Health. Assistant Director of Health Services (Public Health Engg.). 4. Shri T. Durairaj, Ministry of Health. Deputy Assistant Director General of Health Services (Public Health Engineering). 5. Dr. S. P. Raychaudhuri, Planning Commission Senior Specialist (Land (Convener) Resources). The study was approved by the Planning Commission at their meeting held on 27th June, 1963. It has revealed that there is considerable scope for augmenting manual resources of the country from this source which can make a sizeable contribution to agricultural production. This is a problem which is closely related to the health and sanitation problem of urban areas. Fuller and more effective utilisation of these wastes means greater availability of organic manure for the crops and also cleaner towns and cities.
