Planning Commission Working Group on Industrial Planning for Exports In the Eighth Five Year Plan Volume II Sub-Group Reports

Abstract

According to published statistics from the Department of Electronics, the current level of exports from India are about 5.8% of national production. The national target for the eighth plan period of 10% of GDP by way of exports is a very ambitious one. Considering that in many very significant sectors of the economy (as much as 2/3rd perhaps) it is unlikely that we shall achieve any exports at all, e.g. basic metal manufacture, it is implicit that in some other sectors such as electronics perhaps, the export figure may have to be as high as 30% of GDP. For better or worse, therefore some industries will be "export-dominated", even if not export-led
