dc.description.abstractThe Union Territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands consists of 319 big and small islands, of which only 39 islands are inhabited at present. Besides these islands, there are a number of named and unnamed rocks and islets making a total of 556. the islands have a total geographical area of 8293 sq. and according to 1981 census, the total population was 1,88,254. the terrain is generally mountainous with long ranges, of hills enclosing narrow valleys. the islands are divided into two Districts viz. Andaman District and Nicobar District.
