Abstract

The Joint Centre-State Study Team for the Hill Areas of Assam evolved a special strategy for the accelerated development of the Hill Districts of Assam to bring them at par with the level of development reached in the neighbouring areas in the North Eastern Region of the country. The Team/ after carefully considering the socio-economic conditions prevailing in the Hill Districts/ recommended an outlay of Rs.70,50 crores for planned development of the areas over a full five-year period. In view# however/ of the fact that during the first year of the originally proposed Fourth Plan (to have commenced from 1/4/66), only preparatory work could be taken up, an outlay of Rs, 50 crores was eventually decided upon for the five year period 1966-1971. It was further agreed that/ over and above this amount, a sum of Rs, 5 crores would be available on account of Centrally Sponsored Schemes.
