Manipur, lying in the easternmost part of India comprising about 92% of hill areas, is one of the youngest and most underdeveloped States of the country. It came into being only in January, 1972. Roads in Manipur constitute the only mode of communication having long distances with variety of terrains and predominantly rural population. The economic growth of the State has suffered to a great deal due to very poor development of road communication. It can be said that development of rural road has been totally neglected. Therefore, the State is to develop faster and maintain efficient roads system to cater to its transport requirements.
