Revised Second Five Year Plan Delhi Vol I

Abstract

The cultivable area in Delhi State is about 2, 80,000 acres. Absent only one third is under irrigation, and the rest is rain-fed. Under the 2nd Five Year Plan it is proposed to set up an irrigation unit which will do the work of exploring and surveying for the first two years and thereafter will execute and supervise the construction work. 50 Tube-wells will be sunk to irrigation of about 8,000 acres of land, the sinking of 2,000 open wells for small holdings where other irrigation facilities are not available will bring another 8,000 acres of land under irrigation, the water in the Najafgarh Jail will be pumped Part irrigation, and an area of 10,000 acres will thereby be brought under irrigation, and the existing Western Jumna Canal system will be extended to enable an additional area of about 80,000 acres to be irrigated. The total cost of the plan is Rs.10.50 lakhs. It consists of the 5 running schemes and 3 new ones. Under this plan additional expert and skilled staff would be appointed. 13125 mounds of improved seeds will be distributed every year. AJ-1 the cultivable acreage of the State will be protected from insect pests, disease and locust.
