Abstract

West Bengal’s economy acquired a distorted structure through two centuries of colonial rule. The partition of the country dislocated this economy very badly. The developments since Independence did very little to reverse the basic orientation of the economy towards satisfaction of a very small group of persons, many of whom had their loyalty to countries outside India.
