Abstract

The economy of the State mainly depends on agriculture, which contributes 42 % of S.D.P. and 64 % of employment. Small and marginal farmers constitute about 90 % of total farming community of the State. the population growth rate of the State is abnormally high. the average exponential growth rate is 2.98 % against the National average of 2.14 %. There is hardly any scope of getting additional land for cultivation of food crops. It is estimated that annual requirement of food grains during terminal year (T.Y) of Tenth Plan will be 10.05 lakh M.T. and production is expected to be 9.82 M.T. and thereby deficit will be 0.23 lakh M.T. It may be mentioned here that the food grains deficit before the Perspective Plan was 2.18 lakh M.T. which transpires that the deficit is expected to be reduced to a considerable extent at the Terminal Year of Tenth Plan.
