dc.description.abstractThis preliminary study examines the employment patterns of engineers in India’s manufacturing industries as of 1954, focusing on workforce composition, sector-wise ratios, and future manpower requirements. Drawing on survey data from public and private manufacturing establishments, the report highlights wide disparities in the utilization of engineering skills across industries, with particularly low ratios in textiles and higher concentrations in chemicals, petroleum, and transport equipment. The study projects substantial additional demand for both degree and diploma engineers during the Second Five-Year Plan and emphasizes the need for comprehensive manpower surveys to support informed industrial planning and sustainable manufacturing growth in India.
