Abstract

This document provides a comprehensive analysis of sectoral energy demand in India during the Ninth Plan period and projects trends up to 2011-12. Utilizing methodologies such as trend extrapolation, econometric models, and end-use analysis, the study forecasts energy requirements across households, agriculture, commercial, and transport sectors. Key findings indicate rapid growth in road freight traffic, a shift from traditional to commercial energy sources, and increasing reliance on petroleum products, particularly diesel. The analysis highlights sector-specific energy consumption patterns, efficiency improvements, and the associated environmental implications, including carbon emissions. It emphasizes the urgent need for integrated energy and transport policies, investment in renewable energy, and efficiency strategies to ensure sustainable energy supply, economic growth, and environmental protection in India’s evolving demographic and infrastructural landscape.
