Abstract

In 1962, Peter Drucker, the management guru, observed that physical distribution was the US economy’s ‘dark continent’ (Drucker 1962). This comment marked the beginning of an era that saw big advances in logistics management, embracing transportation and distribution functions, which include inventory control, order processing, materials handling, warehousing, and other specialised activities.
